Olivier Charlier (born 17 February 1961) is a French classical violinist.

Biography


Born in Albert, Somme, Charlier was admitted at the age of 10 to the Conservatoire de Paris. Four years later, he obtained a first prize of violin in the class of Jean Fournier, and then decided to perfect his skills in Pierre Doukan's class for violin and in that of Jean Hubeau in chamber music. It was during this period at the CNSM that he met Nadia Boulanger, who, interested in his early gifts, introduced him to Yehudi Menuhin and Henryk Szeryng. In 1976, the latter offered him a scholarship.


He won many international competitions: Munich at 17, Montreal at 18, the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki at 19, the two great French competitions Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition (2nd grand prize) and Georges Enesco of the SACEM at 20, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (4th prize) at 21, and of course the Young Concert Artists International Audition won in New York in 1989 at the age of 28.


Charlier was thus propelled on the greatest musical stages of the whole world, accompanied by French and foreign orchestras (Orchestre national de France, Orchestre de Paris, Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Residentie Orchestra (The Hague, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, The Hallé, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Radio orchestras of Hamburg and Saarbrücken, Chamber Orchestra of Württemberg, Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra).


His concerts transport him from the Americas (United States, Canada, Mexico) to Asia (Japan, Thailand, Malaysia), passing through Africa (South Africa), while paying particular attention to Europe (France, England, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy...).


Since 1981, Charlier has been teaching young students at the Paris Conservatory. He began there as assistant to Pierre Doukan's violin class as well as assistant to Jean Hubeau's chamber music class, and was appointed violin teacher in 1992. He is assisted by Johanna Matkowska.
He plays on a violin by Carlo Bergonzi dated 1747.
