Shawn Ashmore urodził się w Richmond w Kolumbii Brytyjskiej. Jest synem Lindy (gospodyni) i Ricka Ashmore'a (kierownik produkcji). Uczęszczał do Turner Fenton Secondary School. Ma brata bliźniaka – Aarona Ashmore'a również aktora. Aron i Shawn zagrali bliźniaków w kilku filmach, ale grali również role niezależne. Aron jest nieznacznie wyższy niż Shawn.
