Structure

The New King James Version organises this chapter as follows:

  • Revelation 5:1-7 = The Lamb Takes the Scroll

  • Revelation 5:8-14 = Worthy Is the Lamb

Verse 1

New King James Version

I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.[7]

The sealed scroll or book (Greek: βιβλιον, bibliov) is introduced, which will be unsealed step by step in chapter 6 and finally opened with the breach of the seventh seal in Revelation 8:1. "The idea of the book in which the decrees of the Divine government appear written occurs already in Psalm 139:16 and in Exodus 32:32".[8]

Verse 5

New King James Version

But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”[9]

Cross reference: Isaiah 11:10

Verse 11

New King James Version

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,[10]

Verse 12

New King James Version

saying with a loud voice:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

To receive power and riches and wisdom,

And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”[11]

Verse 13

New King James Version

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:

“Blessing and honor and glory and power

Be to Him who sits on the throne,

And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”[12]

Verse 14

New King James Version

Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.[13][14]
