Mount Kirkwood




Mount Kirkwood (63°0′S 60°39′W / 63.000°S 60.650°W / -63.000; -60.650Coordinates: 63°0′S 60°39′W / 63.000°S 60.650°W / -63.000; -60.650) is a mountain, 460 m, standing 3 nautical miles (6 km) west of Entrance Point in the south part of Deception Island, in the South Shetland Islands. First charted by a British expedition 1828-31, under Foster. Named in 1950 by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Commander Harry Kirkwood, Royal Navy, master of the John Biscoe in Antarctic waters, 1948-50.

Electric locomotives with on-board fueled prime movers, such as diesel engines or gas turbines, are classed as diesel-electric or gas turbine-electric and not as electric locomotives, because the electric generator/motor combination serves only as a power transmission system. Electric locomotives benefit from the high efficiency of electric motors, often above 90% (not including the inefficiency of generating the electricity).
