^ In 2011 the existing Shelby County School District assumed control over Memphis schools. In 2013 the majority White suburbs of Memphis seceeded from the district and created 6 new school districts. The current Shelby County School District is nearly identical to the 2010 Memphis School District which was also ranked 23rd.
